What is urban footprint?
It is the ground area covered by urban structures, mostly by buildings. It is usually permanent and is used for purposes such as residential, commercial, industrial, etc.
What is urban growth?
The overall amount of area covered by urban footprint can be considered as urban growth of an area. It is usually taken in temporal context from time A to time B.
What is urban extent?
It is a generalisation of urban footprint for measuring a perceived boundary of urban growth. It includes small open spaces but excludes large ones such as city parks. This website uses special GIS methodology to calculate urban extents from urban footprint.

About the author
I hold a PhD in urban planning (2015) and an MS in Geographical Information Systems (2009). I am working as Research Officer (Spatial Analyst) in LSE Cities at the London School of Economics.
My work focuses on GIS based spatiotemporal analyses of urbanisation and human activity patterns in various local communities across global cities. Mapping of built environment and socioeconomic analysis of urban residents for quality of life and access to services are my main areas of research and study.
I plan to build an extensive database of image maps and urban analysis of Pakistani cities on this website.
